How to save for an apartment in Morocco: a month-by-month plan

Updated 4 November 2026 · by Kenzalo

To buy an apartment, first set the down payment you are aiming for (often a share of the price plus purchase costs), then divide it by the number of months until your target date: that is your monthly saving. Transfer it on payday and track your progress; if the amount is too high, extend the deadline or reduce your spending budget.

1. Set a goal with a figure

The goal is not "buy an apartment" but an amount and a date. It includes the down payment required by the bank (a share of the price) and the purchase costs (notary, registration, land registry…), which add up to a significant sum on top of the price. Check with your bank and a notary for your own situation.

2. Work out your monthly savings

Monthly savings = (goal − savings already available) ÷ number of months. Indicative example:

ItemAmount (example)
Target down payment and costs200,000 DH
Already saved40,000 DH
Still to save160,000 DH
Timeframe36 months
Savings needed per month≈ 4,445 DH

3. Make the goal achievable

  • Extend the timeframe: 48 months instead of 36 greatly reduces the monthly effort.
  • Put one-off income (bonuses, 13th-month salary, daret payout) towards the goal.
  • Review your spending budget: cutting going out and groceries by 10% turns into savings.
  • Keep your savings separate, in an account you don't touch.

4. Track your progress every month

Record every payment towards the goal and look at the percentage reached. If you can't save one month, the monthly savings needed go up a little: better to know right away than to discover you are behind two years later.
